The
story of the tree-river appears in the oral traditions
of many Amazon indigenous groups, with some variations.
It tells of a large tree that was felled and became a
large river because it was filled with water. The trunk
was the origin of the main river and the branches became
its tributaries. The splinters that fell from the tree
became the fish.
